The one that was difficult to push down has the weight of the towed vehicle on it. There is no adjustment to the handles, they are either locked, or not locked, there is no inbetween. This is from the manual. Hooking up Towed Vehicle: Position the towing vehicle on a level surface with a straight driveway ahead and engage the parking brake. Position the towed vehicle behind the towing vehicle in the approximate towing position. Partially extend one leg. Pulling out on the leg will disengage this latch. Repeat for both legs.

If we do tow, should we get a tow dolly or tow four wheels down? If we tow four wheels down, what kind of tow package should we get? Should I tow a car behind my RV at all? We are asked this question all the time. Ultimately, the past two years has been an extensive testing ground for both scenarios — towing and not towing. Recently, we found what we believe is the best setup for our ideal form of travel:

The Blue Ox Allure™ tow bar is specifically designed to fit heavy-duty vehicles, providing a tight turning radius and haul heavy loads with ease. With 10, lbs of towing capacity, it features a lunette eye (to be used with a pintle hook) along with collapsible legs for safer and easier coupling.

In all, 45 of the Continental States. I have never become homesick since we are generally away for only 90 to 14 days at a time but the one thing that I did miss was having my Harley Street Glide Motorcycle to ride, and we have been to many places that were begging to be ridden by motorcycle. Receiver and we have been flat towing our Jeep Wrangler for over 33, miles with 2 bicycles hitched to the Jeep.

This requires about 1 second. The only problem that we have had while towing the Jeep was improperly unlocking the steering column. Plan on buying new tires. Since using this method we have had no further problems with the steering. After the steering is unlocked putting the transmission and transfer case in neutral we were done and ready to tow, until we found out that we were legally supposed to have an auxiliary braking system since the Jeep weighs over lbs.

Time to buy a Blue OX braking system, we selected theirs because no permanent installation is required. We found this system allowed us to pull into a campground and before Dixie could check us in at the office I would have the TOAD disconnected. For most people, and us, this is the easiest and fastest way to have a vehicle to drive around while you are camping.

Now comes the greed factor. This system weighs about to pounds and with a pound motorcycle it added over pounds to the rear of the coach.

I’ve placed 4-orders with etrailer. So far I’ve installed the base plate, the wiring from the rear tail lights to the front end. I also received my Tow bar and the quick release parts. I want to send Kudos to Cathy T for her help and her great customer service. I’am also thanking James A for his quick response to a question about the wiring harness.

I’am extremely happy with the quality of everything I ordered at etrailer. Thanks – RM by:

Should I Tow A Car Behind My RV?

When you brake while towing a vehicle behind an RV, stopping distance is increased due to the weight of the vehicle and it’s momentum pushing against the RV. The ReadyBrake uses this energy to compress a shock and spring inside it which allows an actuator arm to move forward, pulling down your towed vehicle brake pedal with an attached cable. It takes a few hundred pounds of pressure to activate the ReadyBrake, so the towed vehicle will follow the RV down a steep mountain grade only applying brakes when you do.

After initial install, only an adjustable sling cable is used to connect or disconnect the ReadyBrake. We recommend leaving about 2 inches of slack in the adjustable sling cable to keep the brake from activating while going over dips like at a gas station.

Learning how to tow a car behind an RV can be a bit overwhelming. There are multiple ways to tow and once you figure out which way you want to tow, there are still pieces of the puzzle to put together.

Refer to page 4 while installing the KarGard. Mount the tow bar to the towed vehicle’s baseplate, as if to tow it. Support the coupler on blocks or a stand at approximately the same height as your hitch ball. DO NOT hook the tow bar to the towing vehicle. During installation, bolts will be removed and the hook up will make it difficult to remove bolts. Install them with the cups close to the front of the towed vehicle, and the same distance from the towed vehicle.

How the tower bases are oriented will depend on what type of tow bar you have. Page 4 shows the orientation for the Rangefinder II tow bar. Orientation for an Aventa tow bar uses the center hole in the tower bases and the cups of the tower bases point straight backward. Snug the bolts, but do not tighten at this time. There should be two or more threads showing through the lock nut when snug. If this is not the case, obtain a longer bolt from a hardware store, but be certain it is Grade 5.

Fold your tow bar to the stored position to be certain that the tower bases will not interfere, adjust accordingly. The tower bases will work in a wide variety of locations.

There are multiple ways to tow and once you figure out which way you want to tow, there are still pieces of the puzzle to put together. However, once you figure out the initial setup, bringing your favorite vehicle along with you takes a matter of minutes. Those include a 1 trailer, 2 dolly, and 3 dinghy towing. Out of the 3, I would recommend dinghy 4 down towing for your towed vehicle.

A trailer adds a lot of extra weight behind your hitch and you are pretty much guaranteed to need a 10k hitch for the weight. You also have the added annoyance of finding somewhere to park your trailer every time you pull into a campground.

Hooking Up Your Toad To Your Motorhome Once you have obtained the proper pieces to safely tow your vehicle behind your motorhome, the next step is to know the right way to hook up and attach all the pieces. First, you need to attach the tow bar pieces to the baseplate of your vehicle. They are held in place with pins and clasps, but I also add padlocks on each adapter. That way, I have better peace of mind that they will stay in place even if one of the pins should happen to come loose.

Next, the tow bar itself is positioned over the adapters and then attached to the adapters using padlocks or pins. Obviously, you need enough room to get the toad behind the motorhome and relatively straight. The V-bar style tow bar requires that you and your partner get the toad exactly lined up so that the cup on the front of the tow bar is aligned with the ball on the motorhome. Once the cup and ball are mated, be sure that the latch on top of the cup is fully seated and is latched.

It is possible to set the cup on the ball in such a way that the latch will not catch—and your toad can come loose. After attaching the tow bar, and latching the cup and ball, always give the bar a good jerk upwards to be sure that it is not going to pop loose. I always put a long shanked padlock through the holes on the latch—if the padlock will go through the holes, the cup and ball are properly connected.
