With this, the question of whether or not hooking up is sexist can be brought up. In my philosophy class, we read an article by Conor Kelly where he argued that the culture is in fact sexist and consistently disadvantages women. I have to say that I agree with him. Kelly defines the hookup culture using four main characteristics: Kelly explains this idea by first stating that the primary thing young men and women try to avoid when hooking up in college is having a devoted relationship.

Next, Kelly states that the acceptance of ambiguity seemingly offers flexibility when it actually just creates a misinterpretation that the hookup culture may be a lot more prevalent than it actually is. Thirdly, Kelly says that since hookup culture is closely linked to the party scene, alcohol is considered the key component of most hookups in college. Many women would say that the use of alcohol helps them feel more comfortable and willing to have casual sex— sex that they later regret.

Finally, Kelly makes the point that the social pressure for women to conform to the hookup culture has created this falsified definition of a feminist act when it is actually a sexist double standard.

Could the ready availability of sex provided by dating apps actually be making men respect women less?

In fact, dating gave a preponderance of power to men, especially in contrast with previous systems for courtship. Traditionally, men were expected to provide the financial means for each date, which gave them control over a number of factors from venues to initiative.

College students are choosing random hookups over meaningful relationships. Well, it depends on how you define a hookup, but in general rampant casual sex is not the norm, despite what the media is saying. Stories about the college hookup culture are so ubiquitous that a recent story in the New York Times made this sweeping statement: That sounds like a lot.

But wait — 10 or more people over the course of four years in college?

Hookup culture isn’t the real problem facing singles today. It’s math.

The term hookup has an ambiguous definition because it can indicate kissing or any form of physical sexual activity between sexual partners. Sociologist Lisa Wade defines hook-up culture in this video.

Following on the heels of the mass media obsession, sociologists and psychologists have begun to investigate adolescent and young adult hookups more systematically. In this essay, we draw on systematic data and studies of youth sexual practices over time to counter claims that hooking up represents a sudden and alarming change in youth sexual culture. The research shows that there is some truth to popular claims that hookups are bad for women. Scholarship suggests that pop culture feminists have correctly zeroed in on sexual double standards as a key source of gender inequality in sexuality.

The Rise of Limited Liability Hedonism Before examining the consequences of hooking up for girls and young women, we need to look more carefully at the facts. This characterization is simply not true. Young people today are not having more sex at younger ages than their parents. The sexual practices of American youth changed in the 20th century, but the big change came with the Baby Boom cohort who came of age more than 40 years ago. The National Health and Social Life Survey—the gold standard of American sexual practice surveys—found that those born after were more sexually active at younger ages than those born from However, the trend toward greater sexual activity among young people appears to halt or reverse among the youngest cohort in the NHSLS, those born from Finer, Director of Domestic Research for the Guttmacher Institute, found that the percent of women who have had premarital sex by age 20 percent is roughly the same for all cohorts born after He also found that the women in the youngest cohort in this survey—those born from —were less likely to have premarital sex by age 20 than those born before them.

The modern world offers an unprecedented amount of opportunities for different relationships and casual encounters that empower people to experience their sexuality and relationship options without committing to traditional variants, such as becoming engaged or married. Nowadays, people can hook up and date so openly, without facing ostracism, without the fear of judgment.

Still, hookup culture offers a new kind of freedom, so it’s worth exploring a little more. Here are three fascinating facts about hookup culture. Hookup culture began in the twenties and developed in the sixties. Even though hookup culture is reaching new heights today, it began a while back. Although hookups were probably always happening throughout human history, the twenties supplied more opportunities for it to happen.

Young people suddenly had more chances to interact without being chaperoned, by going to a movie theater, for instance. So, it was in the twenties that the seeds for modern hookup culture emerged. In the sixties, the sexual revolution happened, impacting the attitudes that people had on sex. Hookups no longer seemed as necessarily related to marriage or long-term relationships, and relations outside of marriage became socially accepted.

Bad relationships are far worse than bad hookups. While a bad hookup can be very bad, it usually stays a one-time affair, of course, not referring to situations of violence or assault. However, a characteristic of a hookup is that it usually is occasional and doesn’t force the partners to commit to anything they don’t want.

We hear all the time how hookup culture is ruining the lives of young people everywhere, that we’re doomed to never marry and to live in sin for the rest of our days. But, is the hype around our generation’s love of casual sex real?

Or are most of us actually settling down after we sow our wild oats? The American Psychological Association attributes this phenomenon to the unique evolutionary and socio-cultural position that young people in the modern world are marrying and reproducing later than ever, have lower onsets of puberty, and are expected to be independent before moving to the whole marriage and babies thing.

Thus, this period of time between youth and adulthood creates the ideal situation for casual sex. There is some contradictory research however, as one report from the American Sociological Association shows. This study found that college students reported having about the same number of sexual partners between and Although there was a small decline in the amount of college students who had a main boo, this was attributed, just like the APA report, to the generational delay in marriage.
